I was lucky enough to be invited to volunteer at National Young Leaders Day in Palmerston North on March 16 2015. My journey started out at Auckland Airport, with a group of people I had never met before, ready to hop on a plane and start my adventure. I was welcomed with open arms and immediately felt accepted as part of the team. One of the first things I noticed about every single person involved in bringing this event to life was the passion, enthusiasm and drive they all had to make it all happen.

Cam Calkoen is always a stand-out speaker at NYLD. Cam was born with Cerebral Palsy and was told that his two biggest challenges would be the way he walks and talks. But his passion and determination has seen him turn this “can’t do” diagnosis into a dynamic, “can do” attitude. Cam spoke again at the Palmerston North National Young Leaders Day. Academy Award winning audio engineer, Michael Hedges believes a key to success is to be “driven, passionate and really, really crazy – like Steven Speilberg and James Cameron”. Hedges has nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, and over 40 feature credits to his name. He was a stand-out speaker at the 2015 National Young Leaders Day for secondary students in Palmerston North. Questions continued to flow in well after his presentation.
